Back in the day, had a Russian warship had the temerity to fire its guns in the English Channel, a couple of ships would have been sent out from Portsmouth to sink it.
And then a fleet would have been assembled to sail over to Russia and sink a few more ships.
Just to let the Bear know that throwing its weight around is not a good idea.
Now it’s lucky if the Royal Navy can muster a pleasure boat to make a point.
Okay, all this sounds a bit worse than it is at first sight, with the Russian warship crew seemingly warning off a sailing boat that they thought might ram it.
Not quite sure why a warship would worry if a sailing boat ran into it (would it even feel it), unless of course the Russians are very anxious to avoid any more trouble at this time.
The more serious point is that the UK, as an island, is looking very vulnerable to ships that want to make a nuisance of themselves.
And that’s not a good look at the moment.
